Introduction:

Life is an unpredictable journey, often presenting us with unforeseen challenges. Some battles may seem insurmountable, but it's our ability to rise above them that defines us. My name is Suzanne, and today I want to share my personal journey of living with hydrocephalus and blindness. Despite the obstacles I face daily, I've learned to embrace my circumstances and find beauty in every moment.

The Diagnosis:

When I was an infant, My parents took me for a routine visit with the Pediatrician. The doctor measured my head which revealed it was larger than average. Consequently, I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by the accumulation of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. This condition can cause a range of symptoms, including severe headaches, balance issues, and cognitive difficulties. For me, the increased pressure caused total blindness in my right eye and functional sight in my left eye. I was six weeks old when I underwent surgery to implant a shunt—a device that helps regulate the fluid levels in my brain. While the procedure brought some relief, it couldn't prevent the onset of another challenge: blindness.

Living with Blindness:

As a result of over one hundred surgeries, my precious eyesight grew dimmer and dimmer. Blindness gradually crept into my life, taking away the vibrant colors and captivating visuals I had once cherished. It was a slow process, one that required tremendous adjustments. Everyday tasks became daunting as I navigated a world I could no longer see. Learning to read braille, use a cane, and adapt to assistive technologies were just a few of the countless steps I took towards independence.

Finding Strength:

One of the key lessons I've learned through my journey is that strength lies within us all, waiting to be revealed. It may not be apparent at first, but it emerges when we confront adversity head-on. The challenges I faced forced me to redefine my identity and discover untapped potential.

Through blindness, I gained a heightened sense of awareness. My other senses became sharper, allowing me to appreciate the world in a unique way. I discovered the beauty of a bird's song, the fragrance of flowers, and the texture of a book's pages. Each experience became a symphony of sensations, painting vivid pictures in my mind.

Overcoming Limitations:

Hydrocephalus and blindness presented me with physical and emotional limitations. But I refused to let those limitations limit my vision. Instead, I chose to focus on what I could achieve rather than what I couldn't. I surrounded myself with a supportive network of friends, family, and professionals who understood my struggles and encouraged me to chase my dreams.

Education played a pivotal role in my journey. Despite my visual impairment, I pursued a degree in Social Work, utilizing audiobooks, accessible technology, and adaptive strategies to access information. It was an arduous journey, but it taught me that with perseverance and determination, any goal can be within reach.

Spreading Awareness:

Living with hydrocephalus and blindness has ignited a passion within me to advocate for others facing similar challenges. I've become actively involved in organizations, such as American Council of the Blind and the Hydrocephalus Foundation      that raise awareness and provide support for individuals with disabilities. By sharing my story and participating in public speaking engagements, I hope to inspire others to embrace their circumstances and find strength in their unique abilities.

Conclusion:

Living with hydrocephalus and blindness has undoubtedly tested the limits of my resilience. But every obstacle has been an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Through my journey, I have learned to appreciate the world in its entirety, embracing the beauty that lies beyond what the eyes can see. Hydrocephalus and blindness do not define me; they are simply facets of my unique identity. My journey has taught me that life's challenges can become motivation for personal transformation and empowerment. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own journeys, finding strength and purpose in every moment.
